Depression is one of the most debilitating, yet one of the most misunderstood problems around. Is it a disease? Is it a chemical imbalance? Is it a brain dysfunction? Why do so many people suffer from it now when it wasn’t as common years ago and what causes it? There are many more questions – but not very many satisfactory answers!
There is no doubt that someone suffering from depression is ill. Not only is it debilitating, it can be deadly, and physical symptoms such as fatigue, chronic pain, insomnia and nausea often accompany it.
I have noticed a definite family predisposition to the illness – in other words it can be genetic, but I’ve also seen that people with a very unloving or traumatic childhood have a greater tendency to be depressed – so nature and nurture both play a part. None of this is news – but what many people are unaware of is just how much homeopathy can help. Here’s one story to illustrate the gentle power homeopathy has:
Freya was adopted, then her adoptive mother, who she described as her soul mate died when she was 14. Reminiscing she told me,
“I was depressed, but I didn’t know a child could be depressed so although I felt as though I was at the bottom of a big dark hole I put on a brave face and struggled through.”
A few years later she was put on Prozac and Lithium and stayed on them for 7 years until she began to question if they were even helping. Now married and a mother she hoped for more and began to look for other ways to help.
Freya said her moods were up and down, she felt she was always crying which was just pathetic. She looked at everything through a negative lens and often couldn’t sleep which made everything worse. Freya had attempted suicide a few times, but now she was a mother felt that was no longer an option open to her.
“I just can’t function properly. I have these terrible headaches, I feel so anxious all the while, I can’t sleep and I’m afraid my husband will leave me because I’m so useless.”
I gave Freya a homeopathic remedy called Ignatia – she had suffered a lot of loss in her life, she cried often and easily, had a few menstrual problems and was very disappointed in herself, feeling she was letting everyone down.
Six weeks later Freya returned. This is what she said:
“Initially I felt quite unemotional, not the usual rollercoaster and then I started to level out and felt much better. I’m sleeping better and feeling much better. I don’t have as many headaches – that’s cleared a lot and my period was lighter with less pain. I feel a hundred times better than I can ever remember feeling before.”
